Summary:
We are currently recruiting trainee IPA roles to work on our Pembrokeshire contract but if you already have the QCF level 3/4 in Advocacy, why not join our pan Wales team?
About Us:
Dewis Centre for Independent Living is a charitable organisation committed to supporting disabled people, allowing them to live independently, and providing them with ‘choice’. Our dedicated services strive to support them with the care and well-being they deserve.
The original organisation was created in 1996 as a non profit-making Company Limited by Guarantee. It was designed to act as a 3rd party organisation run by disabled people who used its services. Its specific aims were to allow a small number of disabled people to have choice in who they wished to have as their carers (personal assistants) whilst the Company employed the personal assistants.
As Direct Payments became an option in Rhondda Cynon Taf from 2001, the organisation undertook the role of ‘Support Service’. In 2001 it became a C.I.L. (Centre for Independent Living).
As a Centre for Independent Living, it has a management committee composed of disabled people, who use its services, and non-disabled people who are supporters of its ethos and values. The Management Committee oversees the work of the staff and helps to develop future policies.
The Organisation adopted the name Dewis Centre for Independent Living in 2006. It began its work and services around its Direct Payments Support Scheme in Rhondda Cynon Taf. From this original model it has developed similar support schemes in Merthyr Tydfil, then Powys, and in the Vale of Glamorgan. It expanded over the past five years into Advocacy, Training and other services which promote independent living.
Dewis C.I.L. remains a non profit-making organisation and is registered with the Charity Commission. Dewis’s main revenue comes from the Local Authorities who fund the services that Dewis provides.
Job Role:
The role is to deliver our Independent Advocacy service in Pembrokeshire. The place of work is flexible. Currently we have an office in Milford Haven but we can offer these positions as office, hybrid or home based. There will be regular travel throughout Pembrokeshire, and occasionally to our head office in Pontypridd.
The successful applicants will need to be dynamic and self-motivated, work on their own initiative and are fiercely committed to the rights of disabled people and to the value of advocacy. You will be computer literate with a high standard of written and verbal communication, and will have achieved QCF Level 3 or 4 Diploma in Independent Professional Advocacy.
As an Independent Professional Advocate, you will be working with individuals to ensure their voices are heard in decisions that affect their care and support and ensuring their rights are upheld. The post holder must be confident in supporting and representing individual disabled people in a variety of situations and in respect of diverse issues.
Dewis C.I.L is an independent voluntary organisation with an integrated management committee of disabled and non-disabled people. We particularly encourage disabled people and people with direct experience of disability to apply. This post is subject to a satisfactory DBS check.
