Summary:
Our Chartist Heritage is seeking to recruit trustees to its board, are you interested?
About Us:
Our Chartist Heritage (OCH) aims to raise the profile of the Chartist heritage of the Newport region, so that the area becomes more widely known nationally and internationally as the location of the Newport Rising, one of the most significant events in the shaping of British democracy.
We recognise that heritage is about people not just about places or things. A better understanding of local Chartist heritage will benefit the general public living in the South Wales region by enhancing community perception of the authenticity of the area, encouraging a sense of civic pride and shared ownership. The activities of Our Chartist Heritage will encourage members of the public to value more highly their unique heritage as seen in the Chartist story.
Our aim is “the advancement of education for the public benefit in the history and heritage of the Chartist movement by the provision of talks, exhibitions, conferences, educational materials and by such other means as the trustees may from time to time determine.”
‘In line with our charitable purpose, we promote and defend Article 21 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights that affirms the right of all to participate in the government of their country and civic life’.
The members of OCH organise meetings and events, produce leaflets, give talks and lectures, arrange conferences, festivals exhibitions and education programmes, raise funds, conserve and interpret items of heritage. OCH aims to develop educational assets that raise the profile of Chartist heritage and build upon it in order to extend the perceived value of the Chartist history, heritage and culture of Newport and South Wales to extend the pride and confidence of this unique region.
The Role:
We are looking for trustees from a wide range of backgrounds who share our interests and passion.
We are particularly keen to hear from people with the following knowledge and skills:
Enterprise and business development – As a social enterprise we need to identify ways to generate income whilst sharing our work.
Fundraising and income generation – We are keen to better understand the funding landscape and get advice from people who have experience in this field.
Digital expertise – We understand that we live in a digital age and the most effective way of promoting what we do is to do it digitally. We are keen to recruit a trustee who understands digital communications and can advise us on what works and what doesn’t.
Legal expertise – We recognise that within the law there are numerous disciplines, but we feel our board would benefit from someone with legal expertise who can translate legal documents and advise on process when necessary.
Marketing – We realise that if we are to spread the message of the Chartists and communicate their relevance for today that we need someone on the board who understands marketing.
Even if you do not possess the specific skills we are looking for, if you wish to join our board get in touch. We are keen to recruit a diverse board, with people who reflect the community we serve. Even if you have never been a trustee before, give it a go! Training and support available.
